Massage Modalities and their descriptions.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is mostly geared toward a relaxing massage experience. Usually light to medium in pressure, Swedish massage uses long gliding strokes, circular strokes, compression, squeezing, and maybe some shaking. Often the practitioner uses a light oil or creme for pleasant gliding between their skin and that of the client. The experts will always remember that Swedish massage has a moving flow to it and will try to tap into keeping this moving energy throughout the entire session.

Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue is in most cases more geared for therapeutic relief of muscles abnormalities; for example, releasing a large knot in the muscle or breaking up scar tissue from an older injury. This kind of muscular relief and repair may be in a focused area or throughout the entire system depending on the condition of the client. While sometimes this modality can be uncomfortable to begin with, the improvement gained can be pretty incredible in some cases. This massage has less flow than Swedish if any flow at all; we might jump from one area to another depending on what problems the client complains of.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy is under the umbrella of deep tissue massage. There are a few more than 620 potential trigger points possible in human muscles/fascia. Trigger points show up in almost the same places in muscle/fascia in almost every person. An active trigger point is one that actively refers pain.  A latent trigger point is one that exists, but does not yet refer pain actively. We will hold these points with a moderate pressure, always staying within your comfort zone. If the pressure is too great the muscles will not relax because you cannot relax. You may feel some discomfort, but you should be able to relax and BREATHE through the entire process.

 Pre-Natal Massage

This modality has TWO requirements. 1.) Client must be pregnant! :) 2.) Client must be out of their 1st Trimester! This is to prevent miscarriage, as there are several "release" points throughout the body. This is an opportunity for those expecting to come in and be nurtured while they continue to nurture the baby growing inside. Pre-Natal massage is usually performed with the client in a side lying position; a pillow under the head, between the legs/knees, and one in the arms to cradle. Light to medium in pressure we use flowing and relaxing strokes to gently relax the muscles of the body. Often, the client falls asleep as they have not been relaxed in many months, and this is perfectly ok! :)

Sports - Pre Event

This modality is designed to prepare someone for a sports event or active day. Usually no more than 15 mins in length Sports massage uses vigorous compressions, pulling, shaking, and stretching to get the body loosened up and blood flowing. It warms the body up to help prevent injury. Sports massage is never deep because you do not want to overstretch the muscles before the event. This massage should leave you energized and ready to go!

Sports - Post Event or Anytime

This modality is designed for someone who has just exerted themselves or for someone who  just needs a good ol' stretching. Still vigorous in nature, the practitioner uses compressions, squeezing, stretching, and light striking (tapotement) to help rid the body of the toxins it has produced through activity. If you've not been that active lately and just want a good stretch this is the modality for you! Again, this massage is likely to leave you more energized than relaxed.

Hot Stone Therapy

Hot Stone Therapy is geared for a relaxing massage experience. First, a light layer of oil is applied to the skin to allow the stones to glide over the skin gently. Then we use long, gliding strokes over the body with hot stones. Some practitioners also use stone placements around areas of the body to allow the heat of the stone to be absorbed by the body. Hot stone placements, despite the pictures you see, are not placed directly on skin. This is because the stones are around 135 degrees. Therefore to prevent burns we place them on top of a towel. We do not hold the hot stones the entire session; sometimes we use open hand techniques mixed in with the stones. After all, our hands get hot from those stones after time. Come schedule one of the most relaxing experiences money can buy and be pampered by an Expert!
